| DAVID DINKINS, FORMER NEW YORK
CITY MAYOR AND USTA BOARD MEMBER AT LARGE,
![]() tonight understand that our absence is an unavoidable consequence of the kind of struggle that the ATA and it’s members have engaged over the history of the organization." -- Former New York City Mayor
David Dinkins Former Mayor David N. Dinkins was invited to receive
the Arthur Ashe Award presented by the
American Tennis Association July, 26th, 2007. The reception was held
at the Crowne Plaza
LaGuardia. Mayor Dinkins would not cross the picket line at the hotel
put up by the workers at
the hotel represented by the NY Hotel & Motel Trades Council in
an ongoing labor dispute. The
workers have been engaging in a strike due to unfair labor practices (ULP) by the hotel's management and owner.
The Mayor addresses the
issue in a written acceptance speech he presented to the ATA in his
absence, the following is an excerpt:
“I trust that those in attendance tonight understand that our absence (co-honoree Leslie Allen Selmore also refused to cross the picket line) is an unavoidable consequence of the kind of struggle that the ATA and it’s members have engaged over the history of the organization. In this instance, Leslie and I were compelled to choose between being present to accept the high honor that the ATA has bestowed upon us and our support of those folks (who resemble us) who are engaged in a longstanding dispute with the owners and management of tonight’s venue….” Let Crowne Management and the United States Tennis Association know you are angry that you were not informed of this labor dispute and Unfair Labor Practice strike in advance occurring at the Crowne Plaza LaGuardia. Until this is resolved we ask that you please stay in another hotel. The Crowne Plaza LaGuardia and the USTA knew in advance of this labor dispute. You deserve the right to choose a different Hotel!
